San Francisco
A Private Trip

A Cracking Cable Ride
Midweek, late January travel has its benefits.
The weather of San Francisco’s winters is famously mild and so I had pottered down to the starting point of the Powell Mason Cable Car in Fishermans Wharf and I bought a ticket. The area was quiet but a Cable Car pulled in and I gave a cheery greeting to the Brake Man on board and we struck up a conversation.
Next thing, I was invited aboard and off we set. It was a well signed Training Run so no stops for passengers were made. Not only was it is a magnificent ride but I was treated to a talk about the operations and history – and future – of the network by the 2 staff on board. Clearly the staff who operate this network, first opened in 1873, do this for the love of the job and are absolute enthusiasts.
An hour or so later we bade farewell, gave our thanks and embarked on the rest of the day after such a unique tour.
Take a trip to the Cable Car Musuem whilst there.
